Fuck Around and Find Out, 2021

Fuck Around and Find Out is a portrait of materials that tell a story of a good time. Originally a sculpture, this work is publicly shared as a photograph. Murray has been developing a series of works that use photography as a form of protection by putting space between the viewer and artworks that feel too culturally intimate to share in a gallery space. The collection of objects in this work includes the upper part of a fiddle from a box of fiddle parts that Murray inherited from her mooshum, a wooden clothes pin, mitten Pom poms (both from thrift stores) and two six pack rings that have been edged with neon orange glass seed beads. All of these items feel familial even if they're banal or from second hand stores. These materials have been adjusted for example the item tag on the glove strings is cropped to subtly highlight the unimportance of the tag. In the same vein, the invisibility of the six pack rings have been emphasized with vibrant beads nodding to the dualities in this image.

AKA is an artist-run centre operating on what is colonially known as Treaty Six Land that encompasses the traditional homeland of numerous First Nations, including Cree, Dene, Plains Cree, Nakota, Saulteaux, and Ojibwe, and the homeland of the Métis Nation. Our work unfolds with a commitment to honour and continually learn about the histories of this land, and we acknowledge that our efforts to be supportive allies and to enable safe and open exchange are both ongoing and never complete.
